Koh Samui Attractions
Hin Ta - Hin Yai - These unusual formations are known as the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. The site is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike because of their close resemblance to male and female genitals. Their formation and shape have been personified into a local tale describing their existence on the island. The story goes that an old couple's boat wrecked and sunk in the bay, where their bodies washed ashore and created these strange rocks. Whatever their origin though, your pictures will no doubt make for some interesting conversation when shown to friends back home.
Monkey Show - On Samui, the monkey is man's best friend. Since for centuries the people here have used monkeys to do the hardest part of the work climbing the trees to pick ripe nuts on their coconut plantations. Until the advent of tourism, coconuts represented the main industry here, so these industrious little animals were greatly prized. In the outdoor theatre, monkeys display their incredible dexterity, and not just at picking coconuts. The entertainment also includes performing elephants.
Secret Buddha Garden - Hidden in the hills of Samui, the secret Buddha garden has several statues, temples and waterfalls, all of which were built by one man over the last 20 years. It's possible to drive to the garden by 4WD vehicle, but probably easiest to take one of the many jungle tours offered by travel agencies and resorts.
Haad Chaweng and Haad Lamai are Koh Samui is most beautiful and most popular beaches. Both have a huge selection of accommodations suitable for every budget. Please note that room rates increase during the high season, from December to July, when Samui sparkles.
The nightlife of each beach is different: Haad Chaweng is better for couples, women and families, while single men are drawn to the beer bar culture of Haad Lamai. These resorts, as well as Na Thon (Samui's main town), have communications, exchange and car/motorcycle hire facilities.
Other beaches include Haad Choeng Mon, Haad Mae Nam in the north and Haad Na Thon, the island's major seafront settlement where shops, restaurants and tour agencies are concentrated.
Apart from its many lovely beaches and tranquil bays, Koh Samui is also noted for its high quality coconuts that grow densely everywhere. The best time to visit Koh Samui is from February to April when the sea is calm. The Southern dialect and the standard Thai language are spoken while English is widely understood in tourist areas.
