Hmong Hilltribe Lodge Hotel Description

Hmong Hilltribe Lodge Chiangmai provides a unique adventurous experience among the natural beauty of Northern Thailand. Each Lodge has been constructed by native craftsmen using local designs and materials to create this resort which harmoniously resides within the natural surroundings of the wooded hills.

Cradled in a scenic valley of the Suthep-Pui mountain range, Hmong Hilltribe Lodge Chiangmai offers guests a unique opportunity to experience traditional Hmong culture amidst striking natural beauty. Conveniently located in the Mae Rim district, just an hour's drive from Chiang Mai, our jungle lodge combines simplicity and style to create an environment of rustic elegance and serenity. With an elevation of 2,700 feet above mean sea level, the weather at Hmong Hilltribe Lodge is pleasantly mild and cool all year round.

We invite you to visit our lodge and the tribal communities nearby, where you can learn the intricate techniques of traditional Hmong embroidery, weaving and batik. Trekking tours to villages farther afield are led by our experienced guides, through exquisite jungle scenery rich with endemic plant and animal life, while closer to home, our expansive pool area and massage salas offer fabulous ways to unwind. Our Hmong neighbours from the village of Mae Khi also come to our lodge every evening to perform for our guests, communicating key aspects of Hmong culture through song, dance and rituals.

Hmong Hilltribe Lodge Chiangmai is made up of 10 individual houses, each comprising four separate rooms arranged around a central communal area with a large fireplace. Guests may choose from a selection of standard, superior and deluxe rooms.

The site for Hmong Hilltribe Lodge was carefully selected in 1987, after we decided to create an alternative to the lengthy day trips that were the only available means of visiting outlying ethnic villages. The close proximity of several Hmong villages to the lodge allows guests to explore these tribal outposts at their own leisure, or with one of our experienced trekking guides, without the time pressure imposed by a day trip from the city.

Since the inception of Hmong Hilltribe Lodge Chiangmai, we have enjoyed a rich reciprocal relationship with our tribal neighbours. Every evening, following a delicious barbeque and buffet dinner served by moonlight at our open-air restaurant, performers from the nearby Hmong village of Mae Khi stage a cultural show for our guests to enjoy. The show incorporates a series of dances and performances that portray traditional Hmong lifestyle, including a wedding ceremony, a shamanic ritual and the custom of throwing 'makong' (the cotton ball) on Hmong New Year.

The Hmong are an ancient tribal people whose origins are something of a mystery. With no written script of their own, they have preserved their history through tribal traditions and folklore, but the identity of their ancestral homeland has been irrevocably lost in time and translation. It is known only that they travelled through 'a land of dry sands and of cold and snow' and 'a land six months light and six months dark', to Mongolia and southern China. Today, most remaining Hmong are still concentrated in remote, mountainous regions of southern China, but they can also be found in Burma, Laos and Thailand.
